Your first yoga class: what to expect

Almost everyone we meet at the front desk says the same thing: “I’m not flexible enough for yoga.” That is a bit like saying you’re too hungry to eat. Flexibility is something yoga gives you, not something you need first.

Before you arrive

  • Wear something you can move in. Fitted clothes are easiest, since loose shirts fall over your face when you fold forward.
  • Eat lightly. A banana an hour before is fine; a full plate of nasi goreng is not.
  • Bring water. Mats and props are ready for you.

What happens in class

Most classes start with a few quiet breaths, warm up the spine and hips, move through standing poses, then come down to the floor. The last few minutes are savasana: you lie still on your back and do nothing. It sounds easy. It is often the hardest part.

If you get lost

Look around, copy your neighbor, or sit in child’s pose until you feel ready to join in. Nobody is watching you; they are all busy with their own wobbling. Your teacher will come to you, and a block under your hand is never a sign of failure.

Tell your teacher

Before class, mention that it’s your first time and name any injuries, surgery or pregnancy. One sentence is enough, and it means you will get the right options without having to ask.

Our Beginner Yoga class runs five times a week and is made for exactly this moment. See you on the mat.
