Reformer or mat Pilates? How to choose

Joseph Pilates designed his method on the mat first, then built machines to support and challenge it. Both versions train the same things: a strong center, a long spine and control over every movement. The difference is how you get there.

The mat: you against gravity

On the mat, your own body is the resistance. There is nowhere to hide, which makes it a very honest test of your core. It is also the cheaper option, and everything you learn travels with you.

The reformer: springs that help and resist

The reformer is a sliding carriage attached to springs. Those springs can make a move harder, but they can also support you, which is why the machine is so useful after an injury or for people who find floor work uncomfortable.

How to choose

  • Choose the mat if you want to build a practice you can do anywhere, or you are watching your budget.
  • Choose the reformer if you are returning from an injury, want more variety, or like clear feedback from equipment.
  • Choose both if you can. Many of our students do one reformer class and one mat class a week.

New to the machine? Start with Reformer Foundations, where Clara teaches the springs and straps before anything else. If you have a back or joint problem, book a private session first.
